Nació el 11 de julio de 1920 en Vladivostok (Rusia).Ganó el Oscar a mejor actor por "El Rey y yo" [The King and I] (1956); actuó en "Los diez mandamientos" [The Ten Commandments] (1956), "Anastasia" (1956), "Los hermanos Karamazov" [The Brothers Karamazov] (1958), "Los siete magníficos" [The Magnificent Seven] (1960), "Morituri" (1965) y "Almas de metal" [Westworld] (1973).
Falleció el 10 de octubre de 1985.
