Nació el 29 de abril de 1957 en Londres (Inglaterra).Ganó el Oscar a mejor actor por "Mi pie izquierdo" [My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown] (1989), por "Petróleo sangriento" [There Will Be Blood] (2007) y por "Lincoln" (2012); fue nominado por "En el nombre del padre" [In the Name of the Father] (1993) y por "Pandillas de Nueva York" [Gangs of New York] (2002).
